Pressing of the selected material is most commonly performed in mechanical or hydraulic presses that move the tools along a common axis to achieve the desired “green” density and strength. A basic press incorporates a die platen with single action capability while the most complex styles have multiple moving platens to form “multi-level” parts. Presses are available in a wide range of tonnage capability. The tonnage required to press powder into the desired compact shape is determined by multiplying the projected surface area of the part by a load factor determined by the compressibility characteristics of the powder.
